SIGN THE APPEAL FOR KEM SOKHA, PRESIDENT OF THE CAMBODIA NATIONAL RESCUE PARTY, FOR OVER A YEAR IN PRETRIAL DETENTION

We, the undersigned, appeal to the Cambodian authorities to demand the immediate release of Kem Sokha, former President of the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) and member – like Sam Rainsy, who has been forced into exile for years, and the entire former Cambodian parliamentary opposition – of the Nonviolent Radical Party Transnational Transparty (NRPTT), after a ruling on August 30th, 2018 by a Cambodian court which extended its pre-trial detention by another six months. Moreover, on November 16, 2017, a politically motivated sentence of the Cambodian Supreme Court, ruled the dissolution of CNRP thus impeding its participation in the elections of July 29th, 2018.

Kem Sokha was arrested on 3 September 2017 on charges of treason and collusion with foreign powers aimed at overthrowing the government of Hun Sen, who has in been in power uninterruptedly for 33 years. As we could to further verify with a mission of the NRPTT to Cambodia during the sham elections of July 29, 2018, the arrest of Kem Sokha is part of a broader repressive plan that has reduced Cambodia to a one-party dictatorship further alienating the country and the region of south-east Asia from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and from the Rule of Law.
