UNHCR: Critical gaps in protection of people on the move in Sahel and East Africa

On World Anti-Trafficking Day (July 30), UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, estimates that thousands of people fleeing persecution, armed conflict, violence, and poverty are subjected to horrific abuse each year as they travel through the Sahel and East Africa to North Africa. Survivors speak of sexual abuse and rape, kidnapping for ransom, being left to die in the desert, and being subjected to physical and psychological torture.
